I usually enjoy Aphrodite Jones’ work, but I have mixed feelings about this book. Having been obsessed with the Staircase & having read actual case information vs. solely relying on the documentary, I found it rather problematic that she digs her heels in even deeper after the Dwayne Deaver debacle.Where one can say the Staircase favors Michael, I didn’t get the idea that Aphrodite did much better in giving Kathleen or her family a voice. Part true crime, part judge, juror & executioner, ‘A Perfect Husband,’ wasn’t her best work. In trying to tell the story of this bizarre case, I believe the inability to overlook the obvious baiting of bisexual & eccentricities made this read seem more prejudicial than another crime reporter may have mustered.By the end, the comparison to Robert Durst & what was quite possibly the most dramatic moment in any documentary, ever, felt too cliche & something a inexperienced journalist would write. I’m not suggesting she go easy on MP, but I also believe this case does present enough reasonable doubt that I personally have trouble pinning a murder on him. Who do I believe could have been involved? Todd. What does she not mention? He now lives in Mexico. Strange from the beginning & at times it seems like she’ll start to go there & stutter after false starts.Simply put, this is an interesting case, but I did find a few factual errors, including the interpretation of finances. It isn’t super major, but it goes along with her mind being made up. I am one who feels we will never know exactly what happened on the night Kathleen Peterson died. I can’t say Michael is innocent, nor can I say he’s guilty. I truly don’t know. As for the owl, if I’ve learned anything at all it’s that the truth often can be & often is stranger than fiction. Do I believe the owl theory 100%? No. Yet as bizarre as it is, I can’t rule it out in its entirety.If you want to learn more about this case, I do recommend reading, but I’d also advise that depending on how much you’ve already researched, it may or may not provide new insight. The one thing I learned? What a dead body can look like after having been in the ground for nearly 20 years. Yep, there was a picture of Liz Ratliff. I wasn’t exactly expecting/prepared for that. It’s at the end so if you’re sensitive, you may want to stop with the first page of family photos. Oh that note... well? Stay sexy & don’t get murdered? I happened to be watching a tv short series,called the staicase,about this case,filmed in real time by some French filmmakers..and looked for a book to fill in the gaps,the little things that are important but might have been missed on film. There tons of them,leaving me with no doubt about the verdict. Read the book,watch the tv series,a very satisfying combination.
